Backstage with Kara

Hi Beauties,

Step backstage with us for a one-on-one interview with Ballet Beautiful Master Trainer, Kara Walsh. We’re asking her some of our favorite get-to-know-you questions to learn more about the dancer and face behind some of our Prima Workshops and Subscriber Livestreams.

1. When and How did you start dancing?

I started dancing at age 10 at an incredible Performing Arts Conservatory in Litchfield County, CT. My mom was very passionate about the arts and I was exposed to everything from painting to Shakespeare. One day, I peeked into the window of a ballet class and I knew right then and there that I was going to be a dancer for the rest of my life. It was love at first plié!

2. Can you describe a favorite memory of you dancing? Set the stage for us!

One of my favorite dance memories from the past year was recreating the role of the Doll in Karole Armitage’s new film production of The Nutcracker. It was such a special experience to step back into a role that’s so full of playfulness and precision, and to bring it to life in a completely new way for film. Working with Karole and the team to reimagine this classic through her bold, contemporary lens reminded me how endlessly inspiring and transformative dance can be.

3. What is your favorite ballet and why?

My favorite ballet is Romeo and Juliet. The music, the drama, and the emotional depth of the story always move me. I love how the choreography blends passion and tenderness, and how every movement feels charged with meaning. It’s a ballet that allows dancers to fully embody both technical precision and pure, heartfelt expression, the kind of storytelling through movement that reminds me why I fell in love with dance in the first place.

4. What is the biggest motivation for you to work out when you have an “off” day?

I always know that I will feel better after a workout when I’m having an “off” day. For motivation, I often meet a friend at class. Dancing always brings me back to joy!

5. How do unwind at the end of the day after balancing a full day of training and dancing?

At the end of a long day I love to unwind with an Epsom salt bath – it’s the perfect way to soothe tired muscles and reset. I’ll usually follow it with a good book or a favorite TV show, and some gentle rolling or stretching to release any remaining tension. It’s my little ritual to relax, reflect, and take care of my body after a full day of movement.

6. What is your favorite pre- or post- workout snack?

Right now, my favorite light post-workout snack is an apple sprinkled with cinnamon. It’s simple, refreshing, and feels just right for fall, naturally sweet with a touch of warmth. I love how it gives me a little boost after class while still feeling light and nourishing.

7. What is your guilty pleasure meal?

I don’t really have a guilty pleasure meal.  I try to enjoy everything I eat without guilt. I love nourishing vegan food that feels both comforting and wholesome, like a bowl of pasta with roasted vegetables or a cozy soup after a long day.

8. What is your favorite music to play when you work out?

My favorite music to work out to really depends on my mood. Sometimes I love something upbeat and energizing to keep me moving,  pop or soul with a great rhythm. Other times, especially for stretching or mat work, I’ll put on something more calming. Music is such a powerful motivator and can complete transform how a workout feels.

9. What are your 3 favorite workouts in the Streaming Library?

Some of my favorite workouts from the Streaming Library are Backstage Abs for sculpting and strengthening my core, Classic Swan Arms to build graceful, toned arms, and Ballet Cardio Allegra to get my heart pumping while staying in that elegant, ballet-inspired flow.

10. What is your favorite leotard, accessories, or slipper in the Ballet Beautiful store?

My favorite BB activewear piece has to be the mesh wrap tops. They’re so versatile — perfect layered over a leotard, my favorite way to wear them is over a unitard, and they even feel stylish paired with jeans. They’re lightweight, comfortable, and effortlessly chic, making them a go-to for both class and everyday wear.

11. What is your favorite Livestream class style to host?

My favorite livestream to host is the Ballet 101 classes. I love introducing people to the fundamentals of ballet.  It’s so rewarding to share my passion for dance in a way that’s accessible, inspiring, and fun for everyone.

12. Give me 3 words to describe your training style.

My training style is focused and mindful, combining strength, flexibility, and grace. I emphasize alignment, breath, and precision, while keeping the joy and artistry of movement at the heart of every session.

13. What is the most rewarding part of training with Ballet Beauties?

The most rewarding part of training with Ballet Beauties is seeing their growth and feeling the joy of connecting through movement with people of many different backgrounds and abilities. Watching them gain strength, confidence, and a love for dance is truly inspiring.
